Burnham School is a unique K-5 elementary school that is known for its strong culture of collaboration across grade levels. Our multi-grade classroom configuration, organized into our primary and intermediate levels, is built upon the success of a dynamic and thoughtful learning environment. We have four highly qualified staff members for each level with no more than 26 students in each level. Additional staff members that serve our school and are shared between the other schools in our district help to support the learning environments. Our school is a reflective learning community that focuses on continuous improvements. Our highly qualified and dedicated staff members provide rich, personalized instruction in an engaging and caring learning environment focused on high academic and social success. This multi-grade configuration challenges students to strive in academics and shine as citizens of a unique and exciting learning community.
The Primary Level Program for Kindergarten, First, and Second graders focuses on various stages of cognitive development through active and meaningful experiences. The older children assume leadership roles, modeling more sophisticated approaches to problem solving while younger children are able to accomplish more tasks with the assistance and encouragement of their older peers.
The Intermediate Level Program for third, fourth, and fifth graders is based on the foundation of a Responsive Classroom, where social and academic learning go hand-in-hand. Our Community Room is a special place, organized to allow for maximum collaboration and differentiation, while providing a comfortable home base. Our other two work areas are responsive to the needs of each learner – quiet nooks, tech areas, design centers, work hubs, alternative seating options and fluid movement throughout the day provide an environment that truly feels like a learning laboratory.
We are dedicated to our work and proud of our accomplishments with students, staff, and families.
Burnham School is also proud of its connection and commitment to the community. Parents and community volunteers are an integral part of our learning community and provide many enrichment opportunities enhancing our programs. Our parents have a strong commitment to participating in our children’s education. This is demonstrated through our active PTO, high participation in all parent conferences, and high attendance at school functions.
As we look ahead, our goals for developing personalized academic, social and emotional experiences for all students will continue to be at the forefront of our collective work. The efforts of all staff will continue to focus on setting high expectations, developing engaging learning experiences that offer students purpose, challenge, and choice.
