Shepaug is closed to our teachers, administrators, and students until May 20 at a minimum, per order of the governor. In addition, Superintendent Bennett and our custodial staff are working diligently to ensure that all health recommendations are followed.
Only materials that are most crucial to learning have been retrieved from the building. I thank you for your patience and understanding for the items that were left behind before we left and cannot be retrieved. Please be aware that this inconvenience is necessary to ensure that our students and staff will return to a safe, sanitary building.
We began grade level meetings this week. Our seniors met on Friday, and we discussed their questions and concerns. The schedule for upcoming grade level meetings can be found HERE.
The Shepaug Support Services Team is also holding regular Conversations with Counselors to provide all students with access to support. The schedule of upcoming meetings can be found HERE.
We hope that you will not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns that you may have. When you dial the Shepaug main number, 860.868.6200, it rings my (Mrs. Gallo’s) cell phone. Please call. I am happy to speak with you.
Email is another good way to contact any member of the Shepaug faculty and staff. Our emails follow the following formula:
Last name,first initial @region-12.org, e.g.
If more personal contact is desired, you may request an individual virtual meeting, in which we can see each other on our computer screens. We encourage you to attend our general parent Zoom meetings. The schedule for upcoming meetings can be found HERE.
We have been warmed by the excellent attendance and level of participation by our students. We visit several classrooms each day and can see how much our students missed their teachers and classmates, and how much the teachers have missed their students! As one teacher said on the first day of distance learning, “I am still the same teacher that I was when we were together at school. I still care about you, and I still want to teach you important things.” Shepaug is a special place, and we are all very proud of the work that we’ve done to replicate the Shepaug Experience in a virtual environment!
Kimberly Gallo - Principal
Mike Croft - Assistant Principal
Matt Perachi - Athletic Director/Dean of Students
Mike Boucher - Director of School Counseling
Mr. Perachi is frequently attending virtual meetings with the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Committee (CIAC). In short, despite the uncertainty, Connecticut Athletic Directors and the CIAC are committed to considering any and all creative possibilities to offer our student athletes the opportunity to compete as soon as it is safe to do so. Mr. Perachi will continue to keep student athletes informed of any and all new developments.
Student activity coordinators are looking for ways to restart clubs and other activities. Makerspace, STEM Enrichment, Yearbook Club, and Tech Lab are already active. Students can look for information from Miss Gambino. More will follow; students should check their email.
We typically enjoy a number of traditional spring events where we celebrate the accomplishments of our students. Obviously, our first priority is to hold milestone events such as the eighth grade recognition ceremony and graduation. In a meeting with our senior class officers, Superintendent Bennett assured them that, in the event that we are unable to safely hold graduation in June, we are committed to holding graduation at a time in the future that will be mutually planned by our administrators and students. We feel the same way about our eighth grade recognition ceremony. If necessary, we will plan a future event with our students and families. As more specific information about the school year becomes available, I will continue to update you.
Events such as Scholarship Night, Academic Awards, and The Reich Assembly are under consideration for virtual events, if necessary. In short, every effort will be made to connect with our students, both in our virtual classrooms and outside of the school day. We miss our students, and we are working very hard to create a learning environment that allows engagement with the Shepaug faculty and staff and with learning as appropriate to the digital environment.
