Dear Student and Family:
You have learned so much in reading and math this year! It is important to keep practicing your skills during the summer to be ready to enter your next grade. Here you will find information to support the Summer Learning activities to maintain or extend your reading and math skills.
Plant a Seed, Read! is the theme for the 2026 summer reading challenge. Washington Primary School’s goal will be for 100% student participation! All books read over the summer are to be recorded on the Summer Reading Log 2026. Students are also encouraged to record minutes read on a special Summer Bookmark. In addition, The Gunn Memorial Library is a great resource offering many engaging reading activities over the summer. To support our growing readers, students in grades K-2 will receive three books to kick start their summer reading. Please be sure your student returns the three books at the start of the next school year along with their Reading Journal and Summer Bookmark.
To celebrate participation, students will receive a raffle ticket for every book read and a bonus ticket for every chapter book read. Tickets will be given to students in September and one ticket will be selected school-wide. That winner will serve as the Principal for the Day. Additionally, Summer Bookmarks will be entered in a drawing for a special recognition. All students who read at least three books will receive a certificate of achievement and will participate in a Book and Blanket and Bomb Popsicle reading time outside. Let’s embrace the challenge and reach 100% participation for the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge! We can do it!
Math Unlocked: Discover Your Potential is the 2026 Commissioner of Education’s Summer Math Challenge. It is a free online math challenge designed to help students in kindergarten and beyond retain math skills. Students in grades 3-5 can participate in the online Khan Academy Get Ready Courses and all students K-5 can solve the Summer Math Passport tasks (tasks for each grade level can be found at the bottom of this page, and you can record your work in this booklet). Use the Math Log to record your progress. Along with the online math challenge, increase math fact fluency by practicing basic facts for the WPS Summer Fact Challenge. Check out the fun games you can play with a traditional deck of cards. Those students who return math logs and who demonstrate their fact knowledge in September will join the WPS Math Wall of Fame and be entered into a drawing for our first Town Meeting.
Your reading journal, Summer Bookmark, and math log need to be returned to your classroom teacher by Friday, August 28, 2026. Remember that practicing learned skills and growing new skills will help you enter the next grade ready for all the new learning to come.
